Macbeth
by William Shakespeare (in engl. Sprache)
The place: Scotland. The time: the 1970s. The plot: murder.
Macbeth’s ambition is ignited (and ultimately destroyed) by three unsettling witches. Their prophecies convince him that he is destined to become the next mafia boss, and, encouraged by his wife, Lady Macbeth, he decides to speed things up by committing murder. The witches never cast spells on him; they merely plant ideas that he cannot let go of.
Written for King James I, who genuinely believed in witchcraft, the play uses the witches to explore themes such as temptation and self-deception. As Macbeth clings to their ambiguous predictions, he spirals into paranoia and tyranny, proving that relying on supernatural career advice is… unwise.
